MIS:49: Storage

Synopsis

Nagisa begins to show Chiaki the ropes of working Storage.

Author Notes

Fun fact: My first job was actually at a library. I worked in the Storage department in the basement. As described here, it was a fairly lax job with a lot of downtime. Genuinely one of the best jobs I've ever had, and I always wanted to include a character with a library job in my writing as a result. And now I'm writing something where most of the main cast works at one! XD

Anyway, Chiaki hasn't been able to read anything since she got here, but it's only occurring to her now - after realizing she's in a position where reading might be kind of important - that this could actually be a problem.

And as a reminder I don't really know anything about writing with runes. I essentially write out what I want things to say in English, and then change the font to this. So while there may technically be discrepancies if you literally tried to translate it, everything can be kinda translated 1:1 on your own if you know the font. But, if you don't want to go through the trouble, the cover reads: "The Legend of the Prophet, Lilith."

And the inside page reads: "Wielding the Sword of Seven Eyes, she battled the original Demon Lord, Sonneillon and slew him. It was a bittersweet victory, however, and led to the beginning of the Demonic Curse, which would continue to plague our land for millennia to come."

There's a lot to unpack there, but don't worry, it's not super essential information at this very moment. Those details may bear some significance later, but the most important thing at this very moment... is that Chiaki can't read a word of it.

Transcript

So, Storage is pretty lax, all things considered. We have a lot of downtime, so most of our work day is spent reading or chatting.
That sounds like my kind of speed for work.
We do carry a few books down here that people can request. I retrieve it and send it up, and when it’s returned, I put it back. It’s all real easy stuff.
Unfortunately, I didn’t know I’d be showing anyone around today so I already took care of most of it. Now there’s just two books left waiting to go back to their shelves.
We’ll work slowly, I guess.

Let’s say for the sake of argument I can’t read this. Would that make me a bad fit for this job?
Oh. That… might complicate things a little, yeah.
