MIS:4: Prologue 4

Synopsis

Kenta's behavior towards Fumiko is shown

Author Notes

Why yes, Chiaki does think in references to retro video games and anime, why do you ask? Since this takes place in the year 2000, I can't have her make modern references, but I'm going to do my best to make it so that even if you don't know the specific reference, you shouldn't be too lost. In this case, we're looking at Chiaki, Kenta, and Fumiko as characters from the original Dragon Quest. Even if you don't know the characters they're dressed as, I hope that it's clear enough that in her daydream:

Chiaki = Hero
Kenta = Villain
Fumiko = Damsel

Bear with me, though. I'm just a big nerd myself. XD

I'd also like to highlight the two girls Kenta is talking to in Panel 6. The one with glasses is Honoka, and the blonde (the gyaru) is Ai. You don't need to know their names yet so don't worry if you don't remember, but I wanted to mention this in case anyone is curious. We'll see them again.

All that aside, the page also dips into more serious matters. Whether you have a crush on them or not, seeing your friend in a toxic relationship is rough. Especially when they insist "everything is totally fine and you don't need to worry" and it's so obvious to you and literally everyone else that everything is totally not fine. As someone who's been both the one in the relationship not seeing the problem, and the one outside watching my friends hurt, it's sadly a bad time for everyone.

But that's enough out of me for now. We'll wrap up the prologue with the next page tomorrow.

Chiaki is thinking to herself:

And it felt extra hopeless, with her having a boyfriend now.
Worse yet, it’s him...
Kenta Maeda.
On the surface, he was funny, he had good grades, he was the star player on our school’s baseball team, and all the other girls loved him.
I hated him.
And yes, I recognize that part of my disdain was because in my childish, self-indulgent fantasizing, I’d convinced myself “he’d stolen her away from me.”
It was much more than that, though. Over the following months since he and Fumiko first became a couple, I saw his true colors, and I didn’t like the way he treated her. I saw him yell a lot. And he called her names. He spread rumors about her.
Truth be told, I worried about Fumiko a lot... But despite everything, she would just make excuses for him, and all that ever did was make me worry more.
Fumiko would get mad at me when I begged her to leave him, so I often tried to play it off with humor.
Well, if you ever do dump him, just promise me you’ll come get me first. I want front row seats!

Chiaki is thinking to herself:

She was better at playing that game, though. She’d let out her cute, little laugh, and I simply believed that meant everything was going to be okay.
Ha ha ha! Of course! I wouldn’t have it any other way. But you don’t have to worry about me, anyway.

Chiaki is thinking to herself:

I was a gullible fool...
