MIS:7: Where Am I?

Synopsis

Chiaki finds out that she is not in Japan, and starts crying

Author Notes

I think most isekai stories tend to gloss over just how scary it can be to find yourself in a strange and unfamiliar place where no one you know is around (even if we're not talking about a fantasy world, that's super disorienting). I've been very up front about this, but I'll just say again, this isn't one of those power fantasy types of isekai. Chiaki isn't the most powerful being in the world; she's just a scrawny neurodivergent kid, and this is a LOT to process.

It does make this page a bit sad, though. Sorry. I promise it's not all going to be doom and gloom; I just gotta set the stage first. ^^;

There are some interesting things of note here, though. The doctor in the last three panels is the first character to have a traditionally plain white dialogue bubble. Most significant characters have some unique shade to highlight who's speaking. But "NPC type characters" who are unnamed and don't have much of a role beyond a page or two, will get these bland white ones (why waste colors on people I'll never use again). So I hope you're not too attached to this doctor; we'll probably never see him again. XD

But he does mention something called a Spirit Stamp. It's something pertaining to how magic functions in this world. We'll talk a little more about what Stamps are in Chapter 2, but it may be sprinkled into the dialogue or background here and there until then.

The other thing I wanna highlight is Chiaki herself. She briefly goes a little into her family life, and we finally learn her last name, which may or may not mean anything to you depending on whether you read my previous comic or not (it has been my worst kept secret for, like, the past year). Don't sweat it if you haven't, though. MIS and Rain are connected, but they're both standalone too (so it's okay if you read them out of order, or one and not the other).

But if you're interested in Rain, I do appreciate you checking it out. XD

My name is Nara Kendry. And this is my friend and mentor, Redginald Lewis.
You may just call me Redge. Everyone else does.
Anyway, you and I don’t know each other. Like I said, I found you injured out there a few hours ago, and had you rushed to the nearest hospital.
And Redge is a big softee and insisted we follow up that you were okay.
The nearest-
Which hospital is this again? Is this still Tokyo? Shouldn’t there be some medical equipment?
You’re in South Rose Capital Hospital, my dear.
South Rose Cap- What!?
Young lady, do you have family or friends we can contact to let them know you’re okay? What is your name? Where do you live?
My name is Chiaki Koizumi. I live with my mom, dad, and little brother. My parents are both probably still working, but I’m surprised Fumiko didn’t stay with me if I was-

Chiaki opens the curtains and looks out the window

...... ...... ......
What? What!? What’s going on here? This isn’t Tokyo!
Th-th-this isn’t even Japan!

Chiaki starts crying

Where’s my school!? Where am I!?
What’s happening!?
Can we get a doctor in here, please!
My goodness! Are you all right, young lady!?

An hour later...

Doctor:
Thing is, her wound doesn’t appear to be that bad. I checked her bandage, and the Spirit Stamp already seems to have done it’s job and closed the wound up nicely.
Doctor:
There shouldn’t even be scarring.
Doctor:
My concern is she may have a mild concussion and perhaps some memory loss. And she’s saying a lot of strange things. Talking about places we don’t know, and people we can’t locate.
Doctor:
She keeps talking about things like Japan or Fumiko, and I have no idea what any of that means.
