Rain:1212: What've You Read?

Synopsis

Author Notes

Let's distract again!

Rain asks for Emily's opinion on the other things she's read, and I thought it might be a fun to have her just go through her thoughts on various titles quickly. The Birth of the Lilim stuff from a few pages ago may yet prove somewhat relevant going forward, but these pages today are mostly just me having fun with meta. Once again, all the manga in this chapter are all retired story ideas I've had in the past.

Halloween Princess Pandora was basically conceptualized with Rain in mind. I think I meant to do more with it over the course of the story (like Black Wings Kaminari), but it did mostly get relegated to Maria's costume in the Halloween chapter, and a couple throwaway lines here and there. No hard feelings if you'd forgotten about it like Emily did. But that's why it was kinda nice to bring it up again here.

Starstruck was a brief, barely lifted off the ground idea for a shounen-esque sci-fi story. I don't even recall if I ever talked about it publicly. A lot of the inspiration was just me wanting to go off the wall and write something I wouldn't normally. While I enjoy reading/watching/playing sci-fi, I never really had a mind for creating it. And I'm not really about overly fanservicey characters either. I just thought it might be fun to try working with that stuff once. In hindsight, it's one I'm not surprised I didn't stick with, but also for that reason, it's very memorable to me.

And Prodigal Hearts is honestly an old favorite. It was already mostly retired as a story by the time I started posting my art online, but much like I've talked about with Lilith, I have sketchbooks full of these characters. It's been on my mind a lot again this year too. It was a story revolving around teachers at a magic school. And considering how betrayed a lot of us feel by a certain magic school series author who ended being a terrible human being, maybe it'd be worth it for me to consider revisiting this in some way (if I can).

Anyway, these two pages were a lot of fun for me. But they are mostly filler, and discussing abandoned old stories I don't expect most readers to know a lot - if anything - about. So, I'm not sure if it's as fun for you as it is for me. Feel free to let me know if these pages land or not. XD

Um, anyway...
What've you read so far, Emily? Got any favorites yet?
After Birth of the Lilim, I tried the first book for Halloween Princess Pandora. That one seemed familiar too, but I couldn't really place why. Was that also the Kaminari author?
No, but you have seen the character before! There were a bunch of Pandoras at the convention.
And Maria dressed as her on Halloween. Pandora’s a really popular character.
Anyway, I liked the art and it was pretty funny. The premise felt a little absurd, but it held my attention.
Magical girls stuff like this are pretty common in manga. It’s just kind of a thing.
This one does get more and more over the top as it goes, but that's what makes it fun. If you want laughs and cool fights, it's worth keeping up with.
After that, I tried a little bit of Starstruck. I'm not usually much for sci-fi, but the space pirate shtick seemed fun.
The author really likes to home in on the main girl's chest, though.
Heh. Yeah, that one's a little fanservicey. It's not usually my thing, but I still kinda loved her.
The story's okay and all, but I admit I was more invested in her cool, confident - and yes, busty - character, than I was the main plot. I just wanted to be her when I was younger. She's goals...
On a related note, HRT is way too slow.
So, what else?
Well, then there was Prodigial Hearts. I read two volumes of that and I'm actually really eager to keep going when we get back.
Ooh~! That one's real good. It just gets better and better as it goes too! Just wait until the next volume! It gets, like, crazy good!
