For those of you who don’t remember Chanel (first panel), she was the girl from the Halloween party that was wearing the army camo (and really dug Maria’s costume). Although the two characters met and connected a bit at the party, they didn’t really “hang out” per se. I felt like I had a really hard time coming up with a reason for the two to actually talk to each other again. I knew I had to set this in motion, but I couldn’t figure out how.
The end result came from probably my strangest idea that, ironically enough, barely had anything to really do with either Maria or Chanel. Let’s take a couple random guys and have them develop the little known Chanel’s character, just as Maria passes by to hear the most convenient part. Normally, I hate this sort of thing, but I actually really like the way this one came out. It manages to feel more natural than any of the other ideas I had.
I’ve mentioned this in the past when I last did this, but the three boys being uncolored IS indeed intentional. To reiterate, if I don’t color a character, it means they will never contribute to the overall plot and will most likely never appear again in the story. In this case, I actually loosely based their designs off a certain trio of characters from a late 90s cartoon (kudos to you, if you recognize them). I just thought the nod would be neat as long as I’m not ever going to use them anyway. ^_^
