As promised, Ana makes an appearance in this chapter. It's just a cameo for now, but it at least offers some clarity as to where she's been all this time (even if the answer just begs more questions). And you can expect her to have a much more prominent role in the near future. As for what she's in the hospital for - what surgery she's successfully gotten through - maybe it's obvious but I'm not going to say anything outright just yet.

People have been asking about Ana a lot since her last real scene, wondering if I'd forgotten about her. I hadn't. Context just dictated she had to be out of the picture for a while. Especially given that in canon webcomic time, it's only been about a week and a half since her last appearance.

If you're one of the people who has forgotten about her, Anastacia (or Ana "with one N" for short) is the "January Girl", who transferred into St. Hallvard after the New Year. She and her father have moved around a lot for "reasons", to the point where she's been left back a year, placing her in eleventh grade instead of twelfth. Though many boys (and Rain) have crushes on Ana, Gavin was the one she got closest too. The stuffed octopus, Ivan McDorfleton, was a gift to her from him on Valentine's Day, when she was last seen in school. Although Ana told Gavin she'd be out on an "extended vacation", she never said where exactly she was going. She seems to have a lot of secrets like that. She did however, agree to discuss their future when she returned.

'Ruby' Strongwell:

You must really like Allison though.

Gavin Kurz:

What do you mean? Of course I like her. She’s a longtime friend of mine.

'Ruby' Strongwell:

More than that. You didn't pull out your phone even once that whole time. How must Ana feel about you ignoring her like that over another woman?

Gavin Kurz:

Oh, I see. You’re just being a nosy brat again.

Gavin Kurz:

No messages, actually. Total radio silence on her end all day.

'Ruby' Strongwell:

Really?

Gavin Kurz:

She said she might be unreachable for a few days, so I'm not worried.

Gavin Kurz:

And I do like Allison. But only as a friend. I mean, I think she's beautiful, and funny, and awesome, and I used to crush on her so bad. But I never really had a chance.

Gavin Kurz:

Ana though? I've never felt so confident about a girl I liked before. I know you think she's leading me on, but I genuinely think there's something there.

'Ruby' Strongwell:

Where is she right now, anyway?

Gavin Kurz:

Honestly, I never asked. She travels a lot, so I assumed it was just a family thing.
