Liriel Rain Bryer (born August 24th 1995), formerly known as Rain Flaherty, and simply known as Rain, is a transgender girl and the main protagonist of the webcomic Rain.

Rain likes anime and manga, especially "Black Wings Kaminari". Like Emily, she considers her friends from high school her found family.

Biography

Early life

Rain knew she was a girl from early in life, but due to family rejection she suppressed these feelings until came into Fara's care. When she was still presenting as a boy, she used to prefer playing video games at Christmas and on her birthday over trying on clothes.

Life with Fara

Rain came into her aunt Fara's care when her mother died. At some point during this time, Rain came out to Fara as transgender when she was 12, and started presenting in public as female at 16. However, she didn't talk much to anybody other than Fara and was mostly a homebody.

Life in Centerville

Rain and Fara moved to Centerville so that Rain could present full time as a girl. She enrolled in St. Hallvard High School in late August of 2012, where Fara works as an art teacher. Due to an incident with her voice squeaking, she attracted a lot of attention from the male half of the school on her first day attending. Later that same day, she met her old friend Gavin as well a pair of new friends: Maria and Rudy Strongwell. None of the three understood Rain's gender at first but all have since become close friends to Rain.

Dating Rudy

During Halloween, Rudy dressed as a girl. This upset Rain, making her mad at Rudy for most of the night until, in a drunken stupor, Rudy kissed Rain. The next day Rudy explained himself and asked Rain out. It went well at first, until Rain started hormonically transitioning, when she started worrying Rudy only liked her because he thought of her as a boy or boyish. They eventually broke up, when Rain realized while Rudy liked her, she didn't like him back.

Coming out to Her Siblings

Over Christmas, Aiken need a place to stay so Fara offered to help him, despite Rain's objections. When Aiken first arrived, Rain presented as Ryan, her "male" self, and asked Rudy to be Ruby as a girlfriend. This didn't last long as Chase clued Aiken in. Rain spent the rest of Christmas break as a flat-chested girl (she'd given her falsies to Rudy). Fara eventually threw Aiken out when his passive aggressive tactics went over the line. Right afterwards, Kellen called, and Fara explained Rain's trans status, to which she responds with a "I have to go".

The Con and the Haircut

After breaking up with Rudy, Rain tried again to reconcile with her siblings. By this time Aiken was accepting of her, but Kellen was not. Kellen was aggressive, in denial, and grasped at any explanation that would let her have her Baby Bro back. This culminated with her cutting Rain's hair in her sleep. After this, Rain broke all ties with Kellen.

Coming out to Emily

Rain came out to Emily Caston as transgender during a phone call just after her first appointment at Identities: Counseling & Consulting. By that point, Emily already had an inkling about this fact about Rain, and the event brought Rain and Emily closer in spite of Rain having kept Emily in the dark for so long.

Dating Emily

After the haircut, Rain and Emily grew closer together, and eventually they confessed their feelings for each other. At the start (foreshadowing), the two agree to keep their relationship a secret, which was mostly successful aside from a few exceptions.

Getting HRT

On March 11, 2013, Rain meets her endocrinologist and was finally prescribed Estrogen and an anti-androgen (presumably Spironolactone, since Rain is shown to pee frequently, which is an effect of Spiro—technically its on-label use).

Prom

When the Prom King and Queen are announced, Rain was initially crowned as Prom King since she is legally enrolled under her deadname, causing her to almost pass out and making her face hot to the touch. She is recrowned the Prom Queen following a recount.

To divert everyone's attention from Rain being initially labelled Prom King, Rain and Emily publically announce their relationship by kissing on the dance floor in front of everyone.

Inheritance

After an easy process of getting her inheritance, Rain receives a surprising amount of money and changes her name to "Liriel Rain Bryer", taking her late father's deadname in his honor. Rain uses her inheritance money not for transition, but for her life-long goal.

Rain becomes an internet personality, gets a new bunny, rekindles contact with Kellen after her betrayal, and marries Emily.

Personality

She is known to be "obsessive-compulsive" about passing.

Appearance

Much like her siblings, Rain has brown hair and green eyes. Rain has a wide array of clothes with many colors but she's mainly fond of purple attire, especially in later chapters. As she's in her senior year, Rain wears blue sleeves and a blue collar in accordance to St. Hallvard High School's uniform policy.

Rain's hair was quite long and she styled it in several ways. Her most common look involved bangs that covered one of her eyes. Her hair became a lot shorter after Kellen gave her a traumatic haircut, but Emily helped give her a more feminine hairstyle. She has several hair accessories such as headbands and hairpins.

In the epilogue, it is revealed that Rain decided to keep her short hairstyle and now wears her father Lorcan's ribbon.

Orientation

Rain's sexuality isn't fully defined. Early on, Rain has convinced herself that part of passing as a “real girl” includes wanting to have a boyfriend. After breaking up with Rudy, she concludes she is lesbian, though she privately thinks she isn't entirely sure. Later, Rain speculates that she might be bi, but that she still hasn't figured it out.

• Rain's drab outfit was based on an outfit worn by a prior incarnation of Aidyn Vintage, in 2007.

• Like Rain, Jocelyn also figured out that she was trans at an early age. However, unlike Rain, she started coming out at 20.
